🧺 Common Washing Machine Faults (and the Simple Maintenance That Helps Prevent Them)

Washing machines are dependable right up until the moment they aren’t. Most faults don’t arrive out of nowhere either. They usually build up quietly, drop a few hints, and then choose the worst possible day to stop working.
A bit of basic maintenance goes a long way, and knowing the warning signs helps you catch problems before they turn into bigger repairs.
Common Washing Machine Problems
Some of the most frequent issues we see include:
The machine not draining or spinning
Water leaking from the door or underneath
Loud noises during the spin cycle
Cycles stopping halfway through
Clothes coming out less clean than they went in
Many of these faults start small and get worse if ignored.
Check Pockets Before Every Wash (It Matters More Than You Think)
Loose change is one of the biggest troublemakers in washing machines.
Coins left in pockets often end up in the pump filter, and I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve opened one and found enough change to almost pay for a decent cup of coffee. Unfortunately, the machine doesn’t appreciate the tip.
Coins can also slip between the drum and the outer tub, where they rattle around during spin cycles making a loud clanking noise. Left long enough, they can damage the drum or heater.
A quick pocket check before washing saves a lot of noise, stress, and unnecessary repairs.
Door Seal Problems and Mould Build-Up
Mouldy door seals are very common, especially on machines used mainly at low temperatures.
Over time, moisture and detergent residue allow mould to build up, leading to:
Black marks around the seal
Unpleasant smells
Water leaks during washes
If a seal is badly mouldy, split, or leaking, replacement is usually the best option and far cheaper than replacing the whole machine.

How to Help Prevent Door Seal Mould
Leave the door slightly open between washes
Wipe the seal dry occasionally
Use the correct amount of detergent
Run a hot maintenance wash every few weeks
Use the Right Temperature and Detergent
Modern machines are efficient, but they still need the right care.
Constant low-temperature washes can allow grease and detergent residue to build up. Too much detergent doesn’t clean better, it just causes blockages and smells.
Running a 60–90°C wash now and then helps keep the machine clean internally and working properly.
Clean the Soap Drawer
Soap drawers are excellent at hiding old detergent and fabric softener.
If blocked, detergent won’t flush through correctly, which can lead to:
Poor wash results
Residue inside the machine
Mould and unpleasant smells
Remove the drawer regularly and rinse it under warm water to keep things flowing properly.
Telltale Signs Your Washing Machine Needs Repair
Basic maintenance helps, but some signs mean it’s time to call in help:
Persistent leaks
Loud banging, grinding, or metallic noises
Water left in the drum after a cycle
The machine cutting out mid-wash
Repeated error codes
Ignoring these signs often turns a simple repair into a bigger one.
