A faulty oven fan can cause uneven cooking, longer cooking times, and even burnt food. Many modern ovens rely on a fan (fan-assisted or convection oven) to circulate heat evenly around the cavity. When the fan stops working properly, performance drops noticeably.
Below are the most common signs that the oven fan may not be working.

1. Food Cooks Unevenly
One of the first signs of a fan problem is uneven cooking. You may notice:
One side of the food is overcooked while the other is undercooked
Cakes rising unevenly
Food needing turning halfway through cooking (which normally wouldn’t be necessary)
The fan normally distributes heat evenly, so when it fails, hot spots develop inside the oven.
2. Longer Cooking Times
If meals are taking much longer than expected, the fan may not be circulating heat effectively. Fan ovens are designed to cook faster and more evenly than conventional ovens. If cooking times suddenly increase, the fan may not be operating correctly.
3. No Fan Noise
Fan ovens usually make a gentle whirring sound when running. If the oven is switched to a fan setting but you cannot hear the fan spinning, this is a strong indication of a fault.
Sometimes the fan may try to start but stop again, which can also indicate wear or obstruction.
4. Oven Not Heating Properly on Fan Setting
If the oven heats up normally on conventional settings but struggles on the fan setting, the fan motor or fan element may be faulty.
Some ovens rely heavily on the fan element to distribute heat, so a failure can make the oven appear not to heat properly at all.
5. Burning Smell or Strange Noises
A faulty fan can produce unusual symptoms such as:
Rattling noises
Grinding sounds
Burning smells
Fan blades catching on something
These can indicate worn bearings, loose parts, or debris stuck in the fan housing.
6. Oven Trips the Electric
If the oven trips the fuse or circuit breaker when the fan setting is selected, the fan motor or fan element may be shorting internally.
This should be checked promptly to avoid further damage.
7. Fan Spins Slowly or Stops Intermittently
Sometimes the fan still moves but much slower than normal. This can cause:
Poor heat distribution
Hot and cold patches
Inconsistent cooking results
Slow spinning fans often indicate a failing motor.

Experience With Oven Fan Repairs
Over the years, I have carried out many oven repairs involving faulty or noisy fans. In most cases, the issue can be resolved by replacing the fan motor or fan element, restoring the oven back to normal performance without needing a full replacement appliance.
Customers are often relieved to find the repair is usually straightforward and cost-effective compared to buying a new oven.
